1st ever recorded harvest using a production model Stabil-Eyes™ Binocular Sighting System™
After a long hard deer season an opportunity presented itself that was hard to turn away. My good friend Shane Price logged piles of miles and glassed seemingly infinite mountain sides through his Stabil-Eyes mounted binoculars. Here's his story…
"I held a Dedicated Hunter buck deer tag in the Nebo unit in Utah, and spent days afield, but could never find that beautiful buck – or any buck – that I could harvest. I continuously found elk of all sizes, dozens of does, and plenty of grouse. I even successfully arrowed a grouse and that was one fine camp dinner. Gunshots rang out almost daily during the hunt and while I wasn't scoring, I remained optimistic and continued to hunt relentlessly.
"As the season was drawing to a close, during the last remaining hours, I pulled up my binos atop my Stabil-Eyes chest-mounted monopod platform and glassed across multiple ridges.
"Suddenly I noticed a little movement through the glass. Turns out it was a coyote standing 658 yards away, quartering to me. Without the use of Stabil-Eyes I probably would not have seen the coyote. Too little a target without the extended, steady viewing afforded by Stabil-Eyes.
"After spotting the coyote and studying the landscape he stood on, I decided to take the shot.
"I quickly set up my shooting tripod (BOG Havoc), steadied my rifle (Ruger American .308), checked my 'DOPE', looked through my scope (Vortex Diamondback Tactical), pulled the trigger and sent a 150gr .308 bullet downrange, 658 yards away.
"Once I recoved from the recoil and got back on target, I couldn't see the coyote or any movement. Did I miss? Did the coyote take off before I could spot it again?
"Once again I called on my Stabil-Eyes and binos, and glassed the area. Still unsuccessful in spotting the coyote, I decided I needed to go see for myself. This was more than a 1/3 of a mile away and I had to traverse the mountains, crossing 3 ridges to get to the area the coyote had been.
"By rigorously studying the terrain in the coyote's area using Stabil-Eyes, I was able to pinpoint it well enough that I figure I got to within roughly 30 feet of where the coyote stood when I had taken the shot. I was able to successfully recover the coyote.
"While my season may not have ended with a successful harvest of a buck deer, the way I see it, I saved many a deer's life from the harvest of the coyote.
"I still consider the season a success. I found many deer, saw wonderful wildlife, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and was able to harvest my first coyote. I'd call that a good experience."
